How do I know where my diamond was sourced?
Knowing where your diamond comes from is not as important as knowing it was dealt by suppliers who comply with the Kimberly Accord. When diamonds are mined, they are brought to major cutting centers throughout the world. Rough diamonds do not require sourcing information to be provided so they generally get mixed together when sold to cutting centers and diamond distributors. If diamonds are sold as being sourced from certain areas of the world such as Canada or Russia, you know they are coming from that source. Otherwise, one cannot necessarily determine the source of every stone.
What are conflict diamonds?
Conflict diamonds is a term that describes diamonds that were mined in areas of the world experiencing political and civil unrest. They were named conflict diamonds because, in certain areas of the world, they were used to fund illegal militia. The Kimberly Process is now in place to make it illegal to sell uncut diamonds from sources not complying with the Kimberly Process.
What is the Kimberly process?
The Kimberly Process is a legal bill that complies with the UN’s humanitarian agreement. So far 80 countries comply with the Kimberly Process in order to prevent conflict diamonds from appearing on the market.
